Background Check
The BEST Background Search Tips in Hiring a Nanny
Google!
Search using the potential nanny’s married name (if she is married) and maiden name! If a person's name is common, your search will be more difficult. Try variations of the name and include an occupation or location in your online background check. If you put their name in quotations (i.e.: “Debbie Panell”) and then their location (i.e.: “NC”) together exactly like this into the Google search bar: “Debbie Panell”+ “NC” it will narrow your search down greatly. Look for personal Blogs too. Google offers a specialized blog search tool to help you find relevant Blogs.
MySpace
Many nannies are young enough to be a regular user of sites such as myspace.com, but it doesn’t stop there! There is also friendster.com and facebook.com to look during your online background check! On myspace, you can search by name or email address. You will probably have to register to look up this information, but it is free, and only takes a moment.
See what people claim about business affiliations, education, and work history. You may find inconsistencies during the background check of your nanny.
Public records
There have always been public records. But courthouse procedures can be intimidating. There is a huge number of courts today. Many have records online. The National Center for State Courts will help you find state and federal courts. www.GovEngine.com lists local courts. When records can be found online, it makes your online background check much easier!
Search using the individual's name. You'll need to visit various court sites if the person has moved around. Begin by visiting your state's official Web site. You'll find the state's sex offender registry. You should be able to search it by name or address.
Depending on your state, more public records may be available online. You may be able to find property records. State sites will also provide links to local government sites. Check these sites to see what information they offer you regarding online background checks. If you only have time to check ONE court record – make it the court records of the county where your nanny lives. Oftentimes, county court records are not compiled in a state directory!
Alumni associations
You may be able to use the Web to verify college degrees. Visit the school's alumni association. Many list their members and graduation dates. If people aren't listed, that doesn't mean they lied about whether or where they got a degree. They simply may not belong to the alumni association. If someone is listed, it proves that they did graduate from the school.
College registrar offices normally will confirm degrees. All it takes is a phone call.
When doing your online background check of your nanny, the more information you know about the person, the better. Name, address, social security numbers are all valuable tools in assisting you and your online background check! This person is going to be in charge of caring for your children! Take the time to do the research!
